Guide

Instagram, Google and a website each do a different job.

Each one does a different job. Here is which does what, and the one you actually own.

Plenty of good contractors run on Instagram, a Google Business Profile and word of mouth. That works. The question is what a website adds on top, and the short answer is: it is the only one of the three you own, and the only one where you decide what a stranger sees first.

What Instagram does well

Instagram is great at showing work and staying in front of people who already follow you. Past customers see your new jobs, and their friends see them too.

What it does badly is answer questions. Someone deciding between three builders cannot find your service area, your process or your license number in a grid of posts. Google rarely sends anyone to a single Instagram post for a search like "deck builder in Tustin". And you are renting the space: the platform decides who sees each post, and can change that any day.

What your Google Business Profile does well

Your Google profile is essential. Keep it, fill in every field, and keep asking for reviews. It is where people see your rating, your hours and your phone number, often before they see anything else about you.

But it is small. There is little room to explain what you do, show a whole project, or answer the questions people ask before they call. And it works best when it can point to a website that backs it up.

What only a website does

  • It is yours. Your domain, your pages, your order of things. Nobody can change who sees it.
  • It has room. A full page for every service, every area you work in, and every project worth showing.
  • It answers questions. An FAQ in your own words, which is exactly what AI search reads when it decides who to recommend.
  • It is what the others point to. Your Google profile, your Instagram bio and your directory listings all link to it. When those all agree with your site, you look like one solid business.
  • It turns a visitor into a lead. A quote form, a price range or a booking calendar, working while you are on a job.

When you can honestly skip it

If you are booked months out from referrals alone and you do not want more work, or different work, a website will not change much for you right now.

If you want more of a certain kind of job, in a certain area, from people who have never heard of you, that is the job a website does that the other two cannot.
